The days may be shorter at this time of year, but there is still plenty to keep Disabled Children's Register (DCR) members, WAND and WAND+ card holders and their families busy.
For example, children, young people with WAND or WAND+ cards and their carers can swim for free at Places Leisure Centres in Wandsworth and there are reduced rates for soft play sessions, classes and concessions for carers wanting to use the centres during weekdays.
Wandsworth’s Libraries offer a wide range of activities as well as free loans of books and up to three free DVDs at a time for WAND members.
Wandsworth’s parks and open spaces, with their free playgrounds, cycle routes, Battersea Park Zoo and much more besides offer good ways to let off steam - provided you wrap up warm! You can park for free in Battersea Park by displaying your WAND or WAND+ Wallet on your car's dashboard (see the front page of the Newsletter).
Our Local Offer website lists everything else that is available and you can show your family what’s on and hear more about the activities from other members, by checking out our new videos on our SEND Local Offer YouTube channel. Find out more about the Local Offer by reading our most recent annual report.
Wandsworth enjoys excellent public transport to help you get about and TFL colleagues are growing more responsive to the needs of children and young people with SEND. TFL now offer travel training to young people to help build confidence so they can get out more and local bus drivers are increasingly familiar with the WAND card.
Good news for those less able to travel on public transport are recent changes in eligibility for a Blue Badge. From now on, those with more ‘hidden’ disabilities will be able to apply for a card, provided they meet the criteria (see page 11).
Whatever your age or level of ability, we hope you’ll find fun things to do!
This Newsletter is published twice a year and and emailed to over 1,200 members of the DCR and WAND+ project. All of whom have given us their permission to do so, and who can unsubscribe any time they want us to stop.
Joining the DCR is voluntary. It collects information on children and young people aged 0 - 17.
If you are 18 to 24, you may be eligible for a WAND+ card.
