Dance United offer dance training workshops called 'The London Academy' at their central London headquarters.
The London Academy is an intensive full-time intervention (5 days a week, 6 hours a day) modelled on the discipline and production values of professional contemporary dance training. Academy participants work towards performances delivered with professional production values at major theatres in London. Participants also devise and deliver a dance workshop in a primary school and use this opportunity to reflect on their own educational experiences.
The beneficiaries are young people aged 14 – 25, with an offending or risk-of-offending profile and facing multiple challenges in their lives such as addictive behaviours, living in chaotic or violent family situations, caring for siblings, homelessness and mental health issues. Many struggle educationally (with erratic attendance, non-attendance or exclusion).
The ambition is for young people to complete the intervention and follow a positive and sustainable ETE (Education, Training and Employment) pathway with the support of a Dance United mentor for one year.
For young people outcomes of the Academy include:
- Increased self confidence
- Teamwork skills
- Improved fitness
- A GSCE-equivalent qualification featuring a written portfolio
- Transition into education, employment or training
The Academy programme is accredited through the Open College Network London Region (OCNLR). Depending on the number of units participants complete on the programme they can achieve:
- OCNLR Level 1 Award in Progression
- OCNLR Level 1 Certificate in Progression
- OCNLR Level 2 Award in Progression
- OCNLR Level 2 Certificate in Progression
