Portage Service - Coronavirus
The Portage team is continuing with remote Portage sessions at the regular times of home visits, this supports children’s individual developmental play with ideas and suggestions. Also providing a weekly newsletter with play ideas for parents to lead on with children using toys and resources within the home.
Portage is a home-visiting educational service for pre-school children (aged 0 - 3 1/2 years) with special needs or a disability and their families.
To meet the criteria children must be aged 3 months-3 1/2 years and have a delay in two or more areas of development, one of which is a cognitive delay of approximately 6 months or a diagnosis which is known to affect development.
Portage is one of the services offered at the Early Years Centre. The service works with parents and carers of disabled children to help them in developing their child's
- play skills,
- sensory skills,
- physical skills,
- thinking and learning,
- social and self help skills.
The Portage team work as part of a wider multi-professional team to support families. This may include Medical Professionals, Therapists, Social Workers, Early Support, Voluntary Services and Educational Settings.

The service is available for children until they attend a pre school setting for 5 half days per week (or equivalent). The service can only be offered to families living in the Borough of Wandsworth.
Parents can contact the Portage Service on 020 8871 7130 if they think their child would benefit from Portage, or a professional such as a Health Visitor can complete a SoWB (Signs of Well Being form) or EHITS form and send it to the Multi Agency Complex Needs Panel (MACNP) at the Child Development Centre at St George's Hospital.
When referrals are accepted the Portage Team Lead will contact the family and arrange an initial visit to explain Portage teaching methods. A Portage home visitor is then allocated and the parents recieve regular home visits to support the development of their child's play and learning. Portage Home Visitors also offer support to parents to find an appropriate nursery or Childminder for their child and prepare for the transition into nursery.

Complaints about this service: Initially these should be addressed to the Portage worker involved. In the case of any complaints that cannot be resolved in this way, these should be directed to the Portage Team Lead.
