The council has teamed up with local young people and local youth organisations for a winter of fun and learning targeted at those most in need.
*Update December 21, 2020: in the light of the move to Tier 4, we have adjusted the Winter Unlocked programme to ensure the Government guidelines are followed and everyone is kept safe. Our targeted approach will ensure the numbers are small and everyone is able to keep to the guidelines. We have switched some activities to a blend of virtual and socially distanced fun and we will ensure that all sites fully use PPE.
The Winter Unlocked programme is one of the most extensive schemes in the country. Young people can go to their local youth club, get a free meal and take part in activities including:
- martial arts
- music production
- designing and making clothes and gifts
- cooking and baking
- access to tuition
The activities are designed to help young people learn useful skills, with a special emphasis on healthy cooking, eating and exercise to equip them for 2021 and beyond.
Winter unlocked is part of a package of targeted support being offered to young people and families this Christmas, including providing laptops and dongles, free food and financial support targeted at those in particular need. Find out who is eligible.
Cllr Will Sweet, cabinet member for children’s services and education said: “2020 has been hard on everyone, but we are so grateful to Wandsworth families who have been so patient and resilient this year. We want to show that we appreciate their efforts and provide them with support this Christmas.
“Winter unlocked builds upon our successful Summer Unlocked programme, and will be offered first to children in the borough who will most benefit from activity and learning this Christmas holiday.
“We know this is a worrying time with virus rates increasing, but we will follow strict guidelines to keep everyone safe. I would like to wish all families in Wandsworth a very merry, peaceful and safe Christmas and a better 2021.”
